Demonstrators Wear Their Hearts on Their Sleeves Over Cruel Horse-Drawn Carriage Industry

New York - Passions will flare in Central Park on Valentine's Day, but it won't be a love connection when members of PETA and New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets (NYCLASS) hold a spirited protest against the city's cruel and dangerous horse-drawn carriage industry on what is one of its busiest days of the year. Hoisting aloft signs that read, "Cruelty to Horses Is Heartbreaking," park protesters will call on tourists not to take the rides, explaining that forcing old horses to pull heavy loads through the streets deprives them of any semblance of a life and places the safety of both the horses and passengers at risk.

Where:  At the intersection of W. 59th Street and Sixth Avenue, New York City

When:   Thursday, February 14 (Valentine's Day), 12 noon

"Horse-drawn carriages are a cruel throwback to a century ago, and this idea, like the horses, deserves to be put out to pasture," says PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews. "Valentine's Day is about love, but all these animals have ever known is abuse and suffering."

Horses are forced to pull heavy loads in all weather extremes and inhale exhaust fumes. When they're not working, the horses are warehoused in tiny, filthy stalls. Accidents that cause injuries and even death—to horses and tourists—are a regular occurrence. Glee star Lea Michele narrates PETA's behind-the-scenes exposé of New York's horse-drawn carriage industry.

Group Will Give Students a Feel for Intensive Confinement That May Have Them Going Vegan

Irvine, Calif. -- Most students at the University of California–Irvine have probably never been to a factory farm, so peta2—PETA's youth division—is bringing factory farms to them. As part of a national college tour, the group will set up a 20-foot-by-30-foot inflatable tent, inside of which students can confine themselves to sow gestation crates—which are so small that pregnant pigs can't even turn around or take two steps—and watch "Glass Walls," a video exposé of the meat industry narrated by PETA pal Paul McCartney, who famously said, "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian." Students will also receive samples of vegan foods and free vegetarian/vegan starter kits with recipes and tips for helping the Earth, animals, and their own arteries by going meat- and dairy-free.

When:   Wednesday, February 13, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Where:  Aldrich Park, UC-Irvine campus

"College is the time to consider new ideas, and peta2's factory-farm display gives students an idea of how much suffering goes into a chicken nugget or a beef burger," says peta2 Director Marta Holmberg. "Once students see what cows, chickens, and other animals go through on factory farms, in transit, and in slaughterhouses, they'll want to load up their cafeteria trays with humane vegan selections."

Pigs, chickens, fish, and cows feel pain and fear just as intensely as do the animals who share our homes with us, yet they are abused in ways that would be illegal if dogs and cats were the victims. Chickens and turkeys have their throats cut while they're still conscious, piglets are castrated and have their tails cut off without being given any painkillers, and calves raised for their milk have their horns burned out of their skulls. On the decks of fishing boats, fish suffocate or are cut open while they're still alive.

Circus's Violent Treatment of Baby Elephants Brings Out Protesters

For Immediate Release:
February 12, 2013

David Perle 202-483-7382

Atlanta -- A herd of life-sized "baby elephants" will lead PETA protesters on Wednesday against Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.  The protesters will display signs that read, "This Is Ringling Baby-Elephant Training," alongside banners emblazoned with compelling photos taken inside Ringling's training center. The photos expose how baby elephants used by Ringling are stretched out, slammed to the ground, gouged with steel-tipped bullhooks, and shocked with electric prods. These abusive sessions go on for several hours a day in order to force the baby elephants to learn to perform circus tricks out of fear of punishment. An ordinance that would ban the use of bullhooks has been introduced by Atlanta City Council Member Felicia Moore and is pending before the council.

When:   Wednesday, February 13, 12 noon

Where:  Philips Arena, in front of the ticket booth on Centennial Olympic Park Drive, between Philips Drive and Wall Street, Atlanta

"Children would run screaming from the big top if they saw how baby elephants are tied down and forced to perform difficult, confusing, and even painful tricks," says PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Delcianna Winders. "Since children love animals, the last place that parents and grandparents should take them to is the circus."

In late 2011, Ringling paid the largest fine in circus history—$270,000—for violations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), and the circus is now being investigated based on a PETA complaint of even newer alleged AWA violations. Actor Alec Baldwin recently narrated a video exposé that focuses on how circuses abuse elephants.

"Clippers fans may have more to cheer about this year than Lakers fans do, but one thing that fans of both teams can celebrate is STAPLES Center's number-one ranking on PETA's inaugural top 10 most vegetarian-friendly NBA arenas list," says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "Coming away from the concession stands with healthy, humane, and delicious vegetarian fare at STAPLES Center is a slam-dunk."

The offerings at STAPLES Center rival those found at many respectable vegetarian restaurants, starting with the sloppy Joe, which is made from soy-based tempeh with peppers, onions, and brown sugar barbecue sauce. In addition to the veggie burger, grilled vegetable sandwich, edamame, PB&J, and hummus and pita plate, the fish-free sushi is sure to please even the most discriminating palate. Fans in the club sections can also enjoy the couscous salad with peppers, onions, zucchini, and fig vinaigrette; butternut squash with shallots, spinach, toasted pecans, and walnut vinaigrette; and green beans with dried figs, almonds, shallots, and red-wine vinaigrette.

STAPLES Center's stiffest competition came from first runner-up Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Raptors, with its chutney-topped Bollywood veggie dog, vegetarian burrito, and lettuce, tomato, and scallion veggie dog. Third place went to the Philadelphia 76ers' Wells Fargo Center, thanks to the black-bean burger, brown rice–based Malibu Burger, and protein-packed veggie dogs. 'Vegans Make Better Lovers,' Says Sexy Pair

Portland - Wearing nothing but underwear during a display of passion that's bound to raise a few eyebrows and turn lots of heads, two vegan activists, Joseph Vendome and Hayley Ray, will passionately make out in a bed that will be set up on a street in downtown Portland. While the not-so-discreet couple is getting it on beneath a banner that reads, "Vegans Make Better Lovers," PETA members will hand out copies of the group's "'Go Vegetarian, Go Vegan' Starter Kit" to gaping passersby. PETA wants people to know that they can do themselves—and animals—a big favor by going vegan.

When:   Thursday, February 14, 12 noon

Where:  Corner of S.W. Broadway and S.W. Morrison Street, Portland

What's so sexy about going vegan? Besides the fact that heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and various types of cancer—all of which have been conclusively linked to the consumption of meat and other animal-derived products—aren't exactly turn-ons, eating meat is also responsible for an enormous amount of animal suffering and can increase the risk of impotence. Cholesterol and animal fat slow the flow of blood to all the body's vital organs—not just to the heart.

"What could be more of a turn-on than snuggling up to someone who's both passionate and compassionate?" asks Hayley Ray. "It's veggie burgers in the kitchen for a whopper in the bedroom!"

After PETA Appeal, Authorities Enforce County Law and Block Karl Mitchell, Owner of Big Cat Encounters, From Keeping Big Cats

For Immediate Release:
February 14, 2013

David Perle 202-483-7382

Pahrump, Nev. — One more aspect of Karl Mitchell's notorious big-cat exhibition business is now illegal, thanks to last night's vote by the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission (RPC). On the heels of an urgent appeal from PETA, the RPC has unanimously agreed that Mitchell's continued unlawful exhibition of dangerous big animals without a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) exhibitor's license requires revocation of the conditional use permit that has allowed Mitchell to keep dangerous exotic animals on the Pahrump, Nev., property that he is leasing from Raymond Mielzynski.

"Mitchell's decades-long record of cruelty to big cats has caught up with him," says PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Delcianna Winders. "This man has zero respect for animals, for the laws designed to protect them, or for the agencies that enforce those laws, so PETA is relieved that Pahrump has taken an important step toward protecting them all."

Mitchell's lengthy history of violating the federal Animal Welfare Act includes failing to provide animals with adequate living conditions, veterinary care, and palatable food and water; withholding water as a training technique; and, of course, continuing to exhibit big cats illegally. Earlier this week, PETA called on the USDA to bring criminal charges against Mitchell, pointing out that his insistence on defying the law in the face of three cease-and-desist orders and more than $100,000 in fines requires appropriate legal consequences.

Academy of Arts & Minds Charter High School Welcomes Modern Teaching Tools That Make Compassion a Part of Science Classes

Coconut Grove, Fla.— When students at the Academy of Arts & Minds Charter High School start learning about anatomy, none of them will cut into a frog, thanks to a donation from PETA that will replace all frog dissection laboratories at the school.

The animal rights group—through its national educational grants program—has given the school 10 iPads with preloaded copies of Punflay's Virtual Frog Dissection Educational App software, which features 3-dimensional organ views, anatomical comparisons of human and frog organs, and dissection tools. Interactive software such as Virtual Frog has been shown to teach anatomy better than animal dissection.

"PETA's donation will help the Academy of Arts & Minds take the lead in teaching biology with humane, modern methods," says PETA Vice President of Laboratory Investigations Kathy Guillermo. "Countless frogs, pigs, cats, and other animals are still killed for dissection at less progressive schools, even though non-animal methods for teaching biology are far superior."

The millions of animals who are used in school dissections come from biological supply houses, which breed some animals and obtain others from animal shelters or the wild. Comparative studies have repeatedly shown that non-animal teaching methods, such as interactive computer programs, are more effective at teaching biology than crude dissections. These programs also save time and money and increase student confidence and satisfaction. The National Science Teachers Association and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society endorse the use of modern non-animal methods as replacements for animal dissection.

Barred from the Academy Awards, New PETA Video Featuring Phoenix Surfaces in L.A. Times and on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Hollywood, Calif.— Joaquin Phoenix is drowning. In a rare appearance outside his award-winning films, the Oscar nominee is featured in a brand-new PETA video—as teased in the "For Your Consideration" ad in the Calendar section of today's Los Angeles Times (seen here)—that shows him underwater, panicking and struggling to breathe. As the text explains, "In water, humans drown just as fish suffocate on land. It's slow and painful and frightening. … Put yourself in their place. Try to relate. Go vegan." The video, which was shot by top photographer Michael Muller, can be seen here.

Capitalizing on the buzz surrounding Phoenix's critically acclaimed performance in The Master, PETA moved to place the ad during the Academy Awards, but ABC deemed the video to be too political and controversial to run during the broadcast. PETA has now placed the video as a commercial to air during the Jimmy Kimmel Live! post-Oscars broadcast.

"I was 3 years old—to this day it is a vivid memory," Phoenix says of the moment he connected human suffering with animal suffering. "My family and I were on a boat, catching fish. As one fish was caught, he was writhing, then he was thrown against the side of the boat. You couldn't disguise what it was. This was what we did to animals to eat them. The animal went from a living, vibrant creature fighting for life to a violent death. I recognized it, as did my brothers and sisters."

In addition to garnering an Academy Award nomination, Phoenix's work in The Master has already landed him awards from associations of film critics in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Utah, Vancouver, and Austin, Texas, as well as at the Venice Film Festival.

Broadcast-quality video footage of Phoenix's video can be downloaded here. For more information and to view the video, please visit PETA.orgor click here.

Proposed Legislation Seeks to Reinstate Cruel Stunt and Endanger All North Carolina Wildlife

For Immediate Release:
February 14, 2013

David Perle 202-483-7382

Raleigh, N.C. -- Today, TV icon and lifelong Republican Bob Barker sent a letter to members of the North Carolina Standing Committee on Rules and Operation of the Senate urging them to reject Senate Bill 60, otherwise known by the offensive title "The Opossum Right-to-Work Act." The Republican-led effort is a clear attempt to circumvent a judge's recent ruling that trapping a wild opossum using dogs, warehousing the frightened animal for days or weeks, and then lowering the opossum in a box during a loud ruckus—including gunfire and fireworks—at the annual New Year's Eve celebration in Brasstown violated the state's wildlife captivity statue. The bill, which also proposes to strip certain legal protections for other wildlife, is sponsored by North Carolina state Rep. Roger West, who also sponsors the annual Possum Drop.

"West's attempt to carve out a loophole for this event is absurd, since no rational person could conclude that it is even remotely humane," writes Barker. "North Carolina's citizens … don't want to see the legislature move the state backwards by attempting to create loopholes for animal abuse."

For more information, please visit PETA.org

Bob Barker's letter to the North Carolina Standing Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate follows.

February 14, 2013

The Honorable Tom Apodaca
Chair, Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate
North Carolina State Senate

Dear Senator Apodaca,

As a lifelong Republican and one who deeply values our country's natural treasures, I'm writing to express profound concern over Senate Bill 60, also known by the offensive title "The Opossum Right-to-Work Act."

While I am sure that this bill was introduced as a laugh, a moment's reflection will show that it makes a mockery of the legislative process and epitomizes big-government interference by seeking to significantly amend a well-established state law and create a legal loophole to satisfy the petty interests of one man made unhappy by a judge's rightful ruling. The proposed amendment to the state's captivity-licensing statute, which, in its original form, is meant to protect native wild animals, is sponsored by Rep. Roger West, who also sponsors the annual New Year's Eve "Opossum Drop" at Clay Logan's gas station in Brasstown. For this cruel event, a wild opossum is trapped using dogs, held in unnatural surroundings for days or weeks, then placed in a Plexiglas box on New Year's Eve, hoisted above a stage, and subjected to a terrifying barrage of loud music, fireworks, and cannon and musket fire. Since the original captivity statute allows licenses to be issued for activities only in "the interests of humane treatment of wild animals," such as wildlife rehabilitation, West's attempt to carve out a loophole for this event is absurd, since no rational person could conclude that it is even remotely humane.

But the proposed legislation also presents a serious threat to North Carolina's wildlife that goes far beyond the scope of the Opossum Drop. It seeks essentially to strip the state's wild animals of crucial protections and make them vulnerable to a wide array of cruel practices, including being held indefinitely in captivity, being put on display to generate profit or publicity for their captors, and being exploited for any "other purpose." The bill even goes so far as to seek to exempt many citizens from the state's anti-cruelty law.

West's amendment also endangers public safety, since the legislation makes no provision at all for safeguarding residents from the potential threat of disease and other obvious dangers associated with transporting, keeping, and publicly exhibiting a wild animal.

North Carolina's citizens know that this type of legislation rightfully belongs to a bygone era, and they don't want to see the legislature move the state backwards by attempting to create loopholes for animal abuse. I hope to hear that you will oppose this bill, and I hope that clear heads will prevail so that this fine state can be proud of its legislative history.

Sincerely,

Bob Barker

"When Andrew Bynum will suit up for the Sixers remains a mystery, but one thing is certain: Fans looking for healthy, delicious, animal-friendly fare have come to the right place," says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "Walking away from the concession stands at the Wells Fargo Center with top-notch vegetarian food is a slam dunk."

The offerings at the Wells Fargo Center rival those found at many respectable vegetarian restaurants, starting with the black-bean burger. In addition to the veggie dogs, roasted butternut squash soup, fresh fruit, and hummus, Gardenburger's Malibu Burger, which is made from brown rice and served on a toasted roll, is sure to please even the most discriminating palate. Fans in the club sections can also enjoy the wild-mushroom tacos, the vegetable platter, asparagus, and salads.

STAPLES Center, home to the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, came in first placefor its vegan sloppy Joes, vegan sushi, and grilled-veggie sandwich, followed by runner-up Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Raptors, with its chutney-topped Bollywood veggie dog, vegetarian burrito, and lettuce, tomato, and scallion veggie dog. Rounding out the top 10 are the BMO Harris Bradley Center (Milwaukee Bucks), Oracle Arena (Golden State Warriors), the Rose Garden (Portland Trail Blazers), the United Center (Chicago Bulls), the AT&T Center (San Antonio Spurs), Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Indiana Pacers), and The Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit Pistons).

Tempe, Ariz. -- Most students at Arizona State have probably never been to a factory farm, so peta2—PETA's youth division—is bringing factory farms to them.

When:   Monday, February 18 to Wednesday, February 20, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Where:  Student Services Lawn (February 18–19); Hayden Lawn (February 20), Arizona State University campus, Tempe
