Los Angeles -- Three bands and two recording artists who have all spoken out in behalf of animals have been named as finalists for the Libby Awards by peta2, PETA's youth division. The sixth annual Libby Awards ("Libby" is for "liberation") honor animal-friendly people and products. Visitors to peta2.com can vote for their favorites in each category, and peta2 will choose the winners.
Up for the award for Most Animal-Friendly Band are Hellogoodbye, who has worked with peta2 on several projects, including a recent "Grow Your Own Fur" ad, and The Swellers, who recently sat down for an exclusive peta2 interview about why they went vegetarian. Man Overboard's Wayne Wildrick has been nominated for Breakthrough Artist, thanks in part to his exclusive peta2 interview in which he discusses how hardcore music and veganism go together. And Never Shout Never's Christofer Drew, peta2's Sexiest Vegetarian of 2011 and star of a peta2 vegetarian testimonial, might just take home a new title—Favorite peta2 Hottie.
"Whether it's promoting a meat-free diet or speaking out against wearing fur, our nominees are never afraid to stand up for animals," says peta2 Division Manager Marta Holmberg. "These artists aren't just trendsetters in music—they're also leading the way in making the world a more animal-friendly place."
Twenty-nine Libby Awards will be given out this year, recognizing everything from the best cruelty-free cosmetics company to Street Teamer of the Year to peta2's favorite animal-friendly celebrity. Each winner will receive a framed certificate and be featured on peta2.com.
For more information about all the nominees, please visit peta2.com.
Voting ends on December 23, and the winners will be announced on January 17. The winners will be chosen by peta2 based on equal consideration of three factors: the number of votes received, the quality of the animal-friendly product or the nominees' enthusiasm for being animal-friendly, and feedback from the nominees' fans.
