Virginia Beach, Va. -- Fewer cats and dogs in Virginia Beach will be giving birth to unwanted kittens and puppies, getting sick because they weren't vaccinated, or shivering outdoors with little to no shelter from the elements. That's because on Saturday, January 7, the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VBSPCA), PETA, and the Virginia Beach Police Department will offer low-cost spay-and-neuter surgeries for cats and dogs, free rabies and distemper shots for animals who have already been spayed or neutered, free straw bedding, and the opportunity to sign up for PETA's free doghouse delivery program. The unique collaboration—which is targeting low-income residents living in Scarborough Square, Green Run, and Magic Hollow, as well as the Cardinal Estates Mobile Home Park—aims to combat animal homelessness and promote responsible care for animal companions:
When: Saturday, January 7, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. (Free straw bedding and sign-up for doghouse program: 10 a.m.–12 noon)
Where: Outside the Moose Lodge, 3133 Shipps Corner Rd., Virginia Beach
"The only way that we can ever hope to get a handle on the homeless-animal crisis is always to spay and neuter," says VBSPCA Executive Director Sharon Adams. PETA Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch adds, "We're thrilled to be working hand in hand with the Virginia Beach police and the Virginia Beach SPCA, and we'd like to see this example of teamwork to help stop animal suffering emulated in cities across the country."
Residents who are seeking spay-and-neuter surgeries for their cats and dogs can call PETA at 757-962-8227 for an appointment. Cat and dog guardians seeking free shots for their animals must bring proof of sterilization, such as the animal's medical record. No appointment is necessary for vaccinations. The cost for vaccinating unaltered animals will be $10 per vaccine. For information about vaccines, residents can call the Virginia Beach SPCA at 757-323-7729.
