Rockville Centre, N.Y. — When it comes to delicious vegan pizza, it's amore for 3 Brothers Pizza Café, whose Seitan Bacon Ranch pie has been chosen from among 11 finalists nationwide as the winner of PETA's Best Vegan Pizza contest. The award-winning pie boasts a generous topping of grilled seitan, tempeh bacon, tomatoes, Daiya mozzarella, and a drizzle of creamy vegan ranch dressing.
"Long Islanders who want to nix the cholesterol and cruelty that come with eating meat and cheese will be over the moon for 3 Brothers' delicious Seitan Bacon Ranch pie," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "3 Brothers' extensive vegan menu is a great example of how a growing number of restaurants are eagerly satisfying America's hunger for healthy and humane cuisine."
3 Brothers, named for owner Andy Astafa's three sons, opened in 2007. Vegan brother Jay Astafa decided to implement a vegan menu in 2009, and now 3 Brothers' extensive array of vegan options includes delicious Italian-American favorites such as "mozzarella" sticks, fried "calamari," seitan cacciatore, and vegan Caesar salads. Last April, Jay received a Compassionate Teen Award from peta2, PETA's youth division, for his role in bringing vegan fare to 3 Brothers.
The Neapolitan (with fresh basil, tomato slices, and organic tofu ricotta) from Boston's Peace o' Pie came in second on PETA's list, and Chrissie's Choice (with wild mushrooms and basil pesto) from VegiTerranean in Akron, Ohio, rounded out the top three. All three restaurants will receive framed certificates to place in their restaurants.
