St. Louis -- Thanks to its fresh-baked, egg- and dairy-free breads, its vegan black-bean and garden vegetable soups, and its easily "veganizable" salads and sandwiches, Panera Bread has beaten out Moe's Southwest Grill, P.F. Chang's, and Starbucks for the Libby Award for Most Vegan-Friendly Restaurant Chain from peta2, PETA's youth division. The sixth annual Libby Awards ("Libby" is for "liberation") honor animal-friendly people and products.
"Vegans across the country know Panera as a go-to place for delicious, fresh vegan soups, salads, and sandwiches," says peta2 Division Manager Marta Holmberg. "Panera is helping to lead the way in placing delicious vegan entrées squarely in the mainstream."
Why is the demand for vegan menu options growing? Because vegan dishes have none of the animal fat or cholesterol found in meat and dairy products, and they're far kinder to animals.
Twenty-nine Libby Awards will be given out this year, recognizing everything from the best cruelty-free cosmetics company to peta2's favorite animal-friendly celebrity. Each winner will receive a framed certificate and be featured on peta2.com.
