Norfolk, Va. -- As football fans in the New York and Boston metro areas eagerly await the big showdown between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI—not to mention the throngs that will flock to Indianapolis to watch the game in person or just take part in the festivities—PETA wants to give them all food for thought. That's because the group is currently negotiating with outdoor advertisers in the Indianapolis, New York, and Boston areas to display a billboard that features an image of a pair of fluffy baby chickens next to the words "Let Them Keep Their Damn Wings for One Day, OK?" The billboard directs viewers to PETA's collection of delicious vegan game-day recipes in the hope that partygoers will show compassion for the more than 600 million chickens who are killed for the wings consumed during Super Bowl weekend alone.

"The Super Bowl shouldn't mean 'sudden death' for 600 million abused chickens when cholesterol-free vegan wings are delicious and will help keep diehard fans rooting for their favorite teams for many more Super Bowls to come," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Whether you're tailgating before the game or watching from the comfort of your living room, faux wings are a far healthier and kinder way to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday."

Faux chicken from brands such as Gardein, Morningstar Farms, and Boca is full of flavor and packed with protein but contains none of the saturated animal fats or cholesterol found in birds' wings. Mock chicken also saves birds from suffering on factory farms, where they are crammed into dark, filthy sheds. They are drugged and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At the slaughterhouse, chickens' throats are cut while they are still conscious, and millions of birds are scalded to death in defeathering tanks every year.
