San Antonio, Texas -- Armed with signs that read, "Train: KFC Cruelty Is off Track," PETA members will surround the Association of Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchisees Convention at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Antonio two days before Train arrives for its show. PETA wrote to the band in January to explain that chickens killed for KFC are routinely scalded to death. The group called on the band to cancel its show and instead join Chrissie Hynde, Pink, Sir Paul McCartney, and the Smashing Pumpkins in speaking out against KFC cruelty—but so far, the band has given no indication that it will not perform.

When:   Wednesday, February 1, 11 a.m.

Where:  Grand Hyatt Hotel, 600 E. Market St., San Antonio

"Train has a unique opportunity to take a stand for animal welfare—all the band has to do is refuse to take a dime from a company that refuses to spend a dime on the barest improvements for chickens," says PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews. "If Train goes through with this show, it'll have blood on its hands."

Chickens killed for KFC are slammed into shackles and suspended upside down by their feet from conveyor belts—a procedure that often results in broken bones. Birds are still conscious when their throats are cut, and many are then scalded to death in defeathering tanks. KFC's own animal-welfare advisers have recommended that the chain switch to a modern, less-cruel method of slaughter—but KFC refuses to make the switch.
