Queens, N.Y. -- Holding signs that read, "UniverSoul Abuses Animals," PETA members will protest the opening night of UniverSoul Circus as it drags its abusive show into Queens on Tuesday. Protesters will display posters that read, "Elephants Never Forget," and that feature photos showing how elephants in the circus are beaten and shackled.
When: Tuesday, March 29, 6:30 p.m. sharp
Where: Roy Wilkins Park, at the intersection of Merrick and Baisley boulevards, Queens
"The elephants, tigers, and other animals used by UniverSoul have been beaten and deprived of their precious freedom for a lifetime of cheap tricks," says PETA Director Delcianna Winders. "We're telling parents that if their kids love animals, the last place that they should go is the circus."
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has repeatedly cited UniverSoul animal exhibitors for failure to provide veterinary care, medical records, and adequate space. Undercover video footage shows one UniverSoul exhibitor—Tim Frisco of the Carson & Barnes Circus—viciously attacking elephants with a bullhook as they scream in pain. He also instructs other elephant trainers to "[s]ink that hook into them," "[h]urt 'em," and "[m]ake 'em scream."
