San Francisco -- Wearing nothing but bikinis made from strategically placed lettuce leaves and holding signs that read, "Bench Cruelty: Eat Vegan!" PETA's lovely "Lettuce Ladies" will hand out vegan hot wings and vegan barbecue wings in Union Square on Friday. Their goal? To persuade Super Bowl viewers to give healthy and delicious vegan food a try during the big game this year—it might just help them to be around for many more Super Bowls to come. The only things missing are the cruelty and cholesterol.
When: Friday, February 3, 12 noon
Where: Union Square (at the intersection of Geary and Powell streets), San Francisco
"With all the delicious vegan options available, everyone should throw a flag on meat—and that includes football fans," says Lettuce Lady Hayden Hamilton. "No matter which team you place your money on to win the Super Bowl, going vegan is always a safe bet."
In addition to causing animal suffering on a massive scale, vegans are less prone to heart disease, strokes, and cancer than meat-eaters are, according to the American Dietetic Association. And researchers at the University of Chicago have determined that switching to a vegan diet is more effective in countering climate change than switching from a standard car to a hybrid vehicle.
