Los Angeles -- According to news reports, former ballerina, actor, and teacher Zina Bethune was in the process of helping an opossum who had been hit by a vehicle on Forest Lawn Drive on Sunday night when she was struck by two cars and killed. In Bethune's memory and in recognition of her kindness, PETA is honoring her with a posthumous Compassionate Action Award. The award will be presented to Bethune's husband.

A PETA member for many years, Bethune was known for her work with the New York City Ballet, in movies, and on television and Broadway. She was also the founder of Infinite Dreams, a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching dance to children with disabilities.

"Zina dedicated her life to helping those in need," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "The death of such a caring soul is a loss to her family, her friends, and the whole community. We hope that her compassion and courage will inspire others to help animals in distress."

Bethune's widower will receive a framed certificate along with a note of appreciation from PETA.
