McLean, Va. — Human overpopulation is causing problems all around the planet, and dog and cat overpopulation is creating a crisis too. The solution? Fewer births. That's why PETA has launched a new contest just in time to celebrate—rather than lament—National Infertility Awareness Week: One lucky man who has his dog or cat neutered between March 28 and April 27 will be reimbursed up to $500 for his own vasectomy.
"The human population explosion is draining water and land resources and causing huge pollution problems," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk, who was "snipped" years ago and highly recommends it. "Volunteering not to add to the crisis for man or dog helps future generations to avoid scrambling to survive, and spaying and neutering can spare millions of dogs and cats from homelessness."
Any U.S. resident over 21 years of age is eligible to enter by answering the question "Why should PETA neuter you?" on PETA's website. The winner, who will be featured on PETA.org, will be selected on April 28.
The increasing human population (and its corollary demand for animal agriculture) is responsible for disappearing wilderness, vanishing water resources, and pollution, and roughly half of the 6 to 8 million dogs and cats who enter animal shelters every year in the U.S. are euthanized because there simply aren't enough good homes for them. Millions more never make it to an animal shelter and are left to fend for themselves on the streets, where they are subject to cruelty, starvation, disease, or injury. A reduction in reproduction—for humans and other animals—is one of the best ways to prevent animal suffering.
