Albuquerque -- Just as the NCAA basketball tournament gets down to the wire, a pair of PETA beauties decked out in sexy referee outfits and holding signs that read, "Eating Meat Is Foul" and "Bench Cruelty: Go Vegan!" will blow whistles and call "fouls" on members of the busy downtown lunchtime crowd who are eating or ordering meat on Thursday. Their point? To persuade college hoops fans to give healthy and delicious vegan food a try during this year's tournament—and beyond. It might just help them to be around for many more seasons of March Madness to come.
When: Thursday, March 29, 12 noon
Where: Southwest corner of Central Avenue N.E. and Yale Boulevard S.E., Albuquerque
"For tormenting animals, polluting the land and water, and jeopardizing human health, the meat industry 'fouled out' long ago," says sexy referee Hayden Hamilton. "March might be the time for 'Madness,' but it's also a great time to put some sanity in your diet by going vegan."
In addition to avoiding animal suffering, vegans are less prone to heart disease, strokes, and cancer than meat-eaters are, according to the American Dietetic Association. And researchers at the University of Chicago have determined that switching to a vegan diet is more effective in countering climate change than switching from a standard car to a hybrid vehicle.
