Huntsville, Ala. — PETA's heartwarming new video (available here) features Greg Cook, a tornado survivor from rural Alabama who shares the story of how a Category 5 tornado hit his town. He returned home to discover that his house had been destroyed, and he feared that his beloved dog, Coco, hadn't survived. Cook crawled through the wreckage, where, much to his relief, he found his terrified companion.
In the spot, Cook shares a few easy steps that families can take to increase their chances of being reunited with their own animal companions after disasters. "Make sure that your animals have their I.D. tags on them and a harness on them," he urges. "And always keep a current photo of your dog or cat at all times, so if something like this happens, you can find your dog." PETA's accompanying blog post includes more lifesaving tips, such as always having a plan and never leaving animals behind during evacuations.
PETA urges guardians of cats, dogs, and other animal companions to include their animals in emergency and evacuation plans for tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires, and other disasters.
