Cincinnati, Ohio -- While Christians across the country react—with varying levels of enthusiasm—to Light of the World Ministries Pastor Mike Scruggs' racy series of sermons about the importance of marital sex, PETA has fired off a letter to the minister with a tip on how his congregants can really jump-start their sex lives: by going vegan. As PETA explains in the letter—which offers a free meatless candlelit dinner to congregant couples who go vegan for three weeks as well as copies of PETA's vegetarian/vegan starter kit—vegans are less prone to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters are, and they often have more stamina, lower bodyweight, and a reduced risk of sexual dysfunction. People who choose vegan meals are also following God's call to mercy, as plant-based meals save animals from immense suffering on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and on the decks of fishing boats.

"Couples who go vegan amp up their passion for each other and their compassion for God's creation," says PETA Associate Director Christopher Holbein. "PETA hopes that Pastor Scruggs will turn congregants on to the spiritual and sexual benefits of meat-free meals."

The Reverend Mike Scruggs
Senior Pastor
Light of the World Ministries

Dear Reverend Scruggs,

Congratulations on boldly bringing attention to the scarcity of sexual relations in many American marriages. We agree that a healthy sex life can be vital to a healthy married life. Perhaps you would be interested in suggesting that your congregants join you and your wife in trying out a vegan diet? Here's why:  Vegans enjoy many health benefits from going meat- and dairy-free, not least of which are the sexual side effects, including improved stamina, lower body weight, and reduced risk of sexual dysfunction in men and women alike. Vegan foods have none of the cholesterol or saturated animal fats, which clog blood flow to all a person's vital organs, found in meat, eggs, and dairy products. (I would be happy to send you free copies of our vegan starter kit—also known as a "marriage jumpstart kit"—to distribute.)

Not only is adopting a vegan diet good for husbands and wives, it's also good for animals. What happens on today's industrialized meat and dairy farms is as far from romantic as anyone can get: Piglets have their testicles cut off without being given any painkillers, chickens and turkeys are bred to be so fat that their leg bones splinter painfully, fish are suffocated or cut open while they're still alive on the decks of fishing boats, and calves are taken away from their loving mothers within hours of birth. Clearly, such abuse contradicts God's call to mercy and stewardship. Jesus said, "Whatever you do to the least of these, you do to me." The animals exploited by the meat, dairy, and egg industries are truly the meekest among us, completely dependent on our compassion.

We'd love to work together with you to save marriages and animals. If you, your wife, and 50 couples in your church agree to try a vegan diet for just three weeks, we'd be happy to provide you with all the tips, help, recipes, and more that you could wish for and give each couple a romantic, candlelit meat-free dinner.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Christopher Holbein
Associate Director
