Firefighters Revive Dogs and Puppies, Some Only Days Old, While Extinguishing House Fire

Hopewell Township, N.J. -- On the evening of April 2, six volunteer fire companies—the West Trenton Volunteer Fire Company of Ewing Township, the Lawrence Road and Lawrenceville volunteer fire companies of Lawrence Township, and the Pennington Fire Company, Hopewell Fire Department, and Union Fire Company & Rescue Squad of Hopewell Valley—responded to a house fire on Pennington Road. The firefighters immediately sprang into action and, within minutes, had rescued a handful of dogs from the burning home and carried them to the front lawn, where the Lawrence Road firefighters revived them using special oxygen masks designed specifically for dogs, cats, and other animals. Once the fire was under control, firefighters found, rescued, and revived more dogs—including several days-old puppies—bringing the total number of animals saved to more than 20. For the firefighters' heroic actions, all six fire companies will receive PETA's Compassionate Action Award.
"The compassion and heroism shown by members of these fire companies should serve as an inspiration to others always to help animals in need," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Hopewell Valley is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect both residents and their beloved animal companions."
All six fire brigades will receive a letter of appreciation, a framed certificate, and a tray of vegan chocolate chip shortbread cookies. PETA will also send animal oxygen masks to the Pennington Fire Company, Hopewell Fire Department, and Union Fire Company & Rescue Squad, which do not already have them.
