Baltimore, Md. -- Councilmember William "Pete" Welch's proposal to fight Baltimore's budget crunch and keep all the city's fire companies open by offering ad space on fire engines has been brought to the City Council, and PETA is hoping to be the first to jump on the new opportunity. In a letter sent today to Councilmember Welch, PETA asks to run its ad, which reads, "Vegans Are Hot! Free Smokin'-Hot Recipes: PETA.org," on one or more of the city's fire trucks. PETA points out that not only are vegans less prone to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer than meat-eaters are, they're also 18 percent thinner. Their consciences are lighter, too—going vegan is the best way to help stop the daily suffering of billions of animals raised and killed for food.

"PETA is happy to help Baltimore's fire departments from going up in smoke," says PETA Manager Lindsay Rajt. "Our 'Vegans Are Hot' fire truck wouldn't just fight fires—it would also encourage Baltimore residents to rescue their own health while helping animals by dumping artery-clogging meat, eggs, and dairy products."

PETA's letter to Baltimore Councilmember Welch follows.

The Honorable William A. Welch
Councilmember

Dear Councilmember Welch:

I am writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our more than 3 million members and supporters, including thousands in Maryland, with an offer to help keep Baltimore's fire departments from going up in smoke: In light of the recent bill you proposed that would allow advertisements to be placed on the city's fire engines to ease financial trouble, we would like to be the first to offer you a revenue-raising ad that will get hearts racing while preventing heart attacks. Our "Vegans Are Hot! Free Smokin'-Hot Recipes: PETA.org" advertisement, featuring a sexy woman showing off her vegan physique, will drive Baltimore residents to PETA's heart-healthy vegan recipes that will keep them firing on all cylinders. A copy of the artwork is attached.

As emergency responders whose motto is "Pride Protecting People," the Baltimore Fire Department will be pleased to know that placing our pro-vegan ad will help residents safeguard their health and lessen the toll on the city's emergency response team, since vegans are less likely to suffer from heart disease and strokes. Vegans are also about 18 percent thinner than meat-eaters are and have lower rates of diabetes and cancer than their meat-eating counterparts.

Your "pride protecting people" can also be extended to animals: Every Baltimore resident who goes vegan will save more than 100 animals a year from the cruelty of the meat and dairy industries, where chickens and turkeys have their throats cut while they're still conscious, piglets have their tails and testicles cut off without being given any painkillers, fish are suffocated or cut open while they're still alive on the decks of fishing boats, and calves are taken away from their mothers within hours of birth.

Our ad will help your city keep all of its fire departments up and running while passing along a lifesaving message: By going vegan, Baltimore residents can save animals, protect their health, and help themselves become "hot stuff"! Please contact me to discuss our proposal. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Ashley Byrne
Manager of Campaigns
