West Hartford, Conn. -- On April 23, police Officer Thomas Lazure responded to a report of a choking dog in West Hartford. Harry, the 10-year-old canine whose family had frantically placed the call to 911, had stopped breathing after choking on a piece of rawhide. Officer Lazure, who is trained in basic first aid for dogs, used a modified version of the Heimlich maneuver to remove the rawhide from Harry's mouth. Harry resumed breathing and has since made a full recovery—and for his extraordinary efforts to save Harry's life, Officer Lazure will receive PETA's Compassionate Action Award.

"Thanks to Officer Lazure's know-how and compassion, Harry survived his frightening experience, and his family did not prematurely lose their furry friend," says PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. "West Hartford is very fortunate to have police officers like Thomas Lazure who stand ready to aid both the city's human and nonhuman residents."

Officer Lazure will receive a framed certificate, a letter of recognition, and a box of vegan chocolates.
