Cincinnati, Ohio -- PETA will lure Cincinnati shoppers with the promise of free Mother's Day cards on Friday—but inside they'll find some information that may be hard to swallow. Holding signs that read, "Free Mother's Day Cards," local vegans will distribute traditional-looking cards but with a modern message inside: "Help Make It a Happy Day for All Moms—Human and Otherwise," reads the frilly lettering. The cards explain that calves on dairy factory farms are torn away from their mothers, often within days of birth. Many male calves are shoved into tiny veal crates, while most female calves are destined for the same fate as their mothers: repeated artificial insemination until their bodies give out and they are slaughtered for hamburger meat.

When:   Friday, May 11, 12 noon

Where:  Northeast corner of Sixth and Vine streets, Cincinnati

"We hope this 'bait and switch' giveaway prompts people to broaden their perception of Mother's Day and consider respecting all mother animals by going vegan," says PETA campaigner Tracy Patton. Inside each card will be coupons for nondairy products such as soy milk.
