Bismarck, N.D. -- Prompted by reports that North Dakota is the second-most Christian state in the nation, PETA is bringing its sexy "Eating Meat Is a Sin: Go Vegetarian" campaign, starring Christian hip-hop heiress and Pastry cofounder and designer Angela Simmons, to Bismarck in the hope of inspiring the Peace Garden State's devout to show mercy to all of God's creation by choosing vegetarian meals. In the ad, which PETA is hoping to place on Bismarck-area billboards, the Run's House star appears covered only by her flowing hair and a single vine of ivy as she holds an apple in a Garden of Eden homage.
"Compassion is the cornerstone of Jesus' teachings, and choosing vegetarian meals is the best way to show compassion for animals—the most vulnerable of God's creation," says PETA's Christopher Holbein. "PETA wants North Dakotans of all creeds to know that they make the world a more merciful place simply by leaving meat off their dinner plates."
Today's industrialized meat industry is hell on Earth for animals: Chickens and turkeys have their throats cut while they're still conscious, piglets have their tails and testicles cut off without being given any painkillers, and fish are suffocated or cut open while they're still alive on the decks of fishing boats. Going vegetarian helps reduce human suffering, too: According to the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vegetarians are less prone to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters are.
