Huntington, Ind. — North Huntington High School student Jessie Earhart will have to wait a little longer to buy that car she's been saving up for, but the 15-year-old isn't complaining. That's because the $400 that Jessie had put away went instead to save the life of Lilly, a 1-year-old dog whom Jessie and her mother rescued from the side of Rangeline Road. Lilly had a deep, bleeding gash across her face, and one of her eyes was swollen shut. According to the vet who examined Lilly, someone had struck the dog in the face with a sharp object. When Jessie learned that Lilly had no identification—and therefore, no one to take care of her—the kind student immediately applied her savings to Lilly's medical bills. Thanks to Jessie and her mother, Lilly is now a happy member of the Earhart household—and for saving Lilly's life and placing her well-being above all else, Jessie will receive a Compassionate Action Award from peta2, PETA's youth division.
"Thanks to Jessie's kindness and sacrifice, Lilly's story has a happy ending," says peta2 Director Dan Shannon. "This story will inspire others to stop and help when they come across an animal in distress."
Jessie will receive a framed certificate and $50 toward rebuilding her savings, and she'll be featured in a blog post on peta2.com. Lilly will receive vegan dog treats from peta2.
