Memphis, Tenn. -- Wearing little more than stylish faux-leather spiked heels and a banner reading, "Pleather Your Tootsies," two PETA beauties will demonstrate at a busy Memphis intersection on Friday to expose the cruelty to animals that is inherent in every pair of leather shoes while revealing that you don't need to wear animal skins to look hot.
When: Friday, June 15, 12 noon
Where: Intersection of S. Third and Beale streets, Memphis
"By showing some of our skin, we hope to save animals' skin," says PETA volunteer Whitney Calk. "With today's chic and comfortable synthetics and faux leather, it's easy for fashionistas with a shoe fetish to kick the leather habit."
In the U.S., most of the millions of cows and other animals who are killed for their skin endure the horrors of factory farming, including extreme crowding and deprivation as well as castration, branding, tail-docking, and dehorning—often without any painkillers. At slaughterhouses, animals routinely have their throats cut and are skinned and dismembered while they are still conscious. Also, the toxic chemicals used by tanneries are extremely harmful to workers, and they foul the environment.
