Washington -- They say it's Paul McCartney's birthday—and PETA is ready to celebrate the special day of one of its most famous supporters with the public. Armed with signs that read, "Happy Birthday, Paul!" and a giant birthday card showing costumed animals crossing Abbey Road, which passersby will be invited to sign, PETA members will dish out delicious vegan confections from Sticky Fingers at Franklin Square on Monday in honor of the former Beatle's 70th. PETA will also give away copies of McCartney's "Glass Walls" exposé of the meat industry, which reveals how pigs, cows, chickens, and other animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses suffer immensely before they are killed for food.
When: Monday, June 18, 12 noon
Where: Franklin Square, at the intersection of K Street N.W. and 13th Street N.W., Washington
"I've often said, 'If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian,'" explains McCartney, who has been vegetarian ever since he and his late wife, Linda, watched lambs in a field near their home more than 40 years ago. "I hope that once you see the routine cruelty involved in raising, transporting, and killing animals for food, you'll join the millions of people who have decided to leave meat off their plates—for good."
As McCartney's highly successful "Meat Free Monday" initiative points out, vegan meals are not only kinder to animals but also far better for the environment, world hunger, and human health. Says McCartney, "If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you could do. It's staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty."
