Washington -- Wearing a cow costume, an apron, and a chef's hat, a PETA member will hand out free vegan meatballs to passersby outside the recently closed Meatballs restaurant in Penn Quarter on Thursday. The bovine gourmand's point? That instead of lamenting the departure of another restaurant selling unhealthy and cruelly obtained animal flesh, residents should use the opportunity to discover the world of delicious, nutritious vegan cuisine.

When:   Friday, July 6, 12 noon

Where:  Outside the former Meatballs restaurant, 624 E St. N.W. (near the intersection with Seventh Street N.W.), Washington

In addition to causing animal suffering on a massive scale, meat, eggs, and dairy products contain no fiber and are loaded with artery-clogging saturated fat and cholesterol. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vegetarians are less prone to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer than meat-eaters are. Also, raising animals for food is a leading cause of water pollution, land degradation, and greenhouse-gas emissions.

"D.C. residents can begin to improve their health one vegan meatball at a time," says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "With so many faux meats available, there's never been a better time to turn over a new leaf and go vegan."
