Norfolk, Va. — Americans who choose to stick to healthy and humane vegan meals love comfort food as much as anyone else—and in honor of National Macaroni Day, which falls on July 7, PETA is celebrating the Top Five Best Vegan Mac and Cheese Dishes.

Taking first place on the list is Sublime in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which nabbed the distinction thanks to its mac and cheese's decadent Dijon béchamel cheddar "cheese" sauce and crumbly topping of panko bread crumbs, oven baked until crispy brown.

Rounding out the top five are Salt Lake City's City Cakes & Café, whose rich and creamy vegan "cheeze" sauce is made of blended cashews and roasted red peppers; Vancouver's Wallflower Modern Diner, where the flavorful, baked mac and cheese—made with soy vegan cheddar—can be bulked up with sliced veggie hot dogs; Soul Vegetarian in Tallahassee, Fla., which dishes up a mac and cheese as a side that rounds out a perfect plate of steamed collard greens, barbecue tofu, and cornbread; and Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant in Worcester, Mass., where the mac and cheese is a creamy blend of almond milk, soy milk, and vegan cheddar cheese, with even more vegan cheese baked on top.

Seattle's Plum Bistro and the Cornbread Café in Eugene, Ore., both nabbed honorable mentions.

"Nowadays, it's easier than ever to enjoy delicious comfort food that's both healthy and humane," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "PETA applauds these restaurants for demonstrating how dairy-free mac and cheese nourishes diners' bodies and souls without clogging their arteries."
