Worcester, Mass. — Americans who choose to stick to healthy and humane vegan meals love comfort food as much as anyone else—and in honor of National Macaroni Day, which falls on July 7, PETA is celebrating the Top Five Best Vegan Mac-and-Cheese Dishes. Taking the number-five spot on the list is Worcester's own Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant, which nabbed the distinction thanks to its mac-and-cheese sauce's creamy blend of almond milk, soy milk, and vegan cheddar cheese—and the dish's extra layer of even more vegan cheddar cheese baked on top.

Taking first place is Sublime in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., whose oven-baked vegan mac and cheese starts with a decadent Dijon béchamel cheddar base and finishes with a crumbly topping of panko bread crumbs.

The top five also include Salt Lake City's City Cakes & Café, whose rich and creamy vegan "cheeze" sauce is made of blended cashews and roasted red peppers, and Soul Vegetarian in Tallahassee, Fla., which dishes up mac and cheese as a side dish that rounds out a perfect plate of steamed collard greens, barbecued tofu, and cornbread. And even though it's not in the U.S., PETA's tasters couldn't resist including Vancouver's Wallflower Modern Diner, where the flavorful baked mac and cheese—made with soy vegan cheddar—can be bulked up with sliced veggie hot dogs.

Seattle's Plum Bistro and the Cornbread Café in Eugene, Ore., both nabbed honorable mentions.

"Nowadays, it's easier than ever to enjoy delicious comfort food that's both healthy and humane," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "PETA applauds Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant for demonstrating how dairy-free mac and cheese nourishes diners' bodies and souls without clogging their arteries."
