PETA Reminds Passersby That Summer Is No Vacation for Animals on Fur Farms

Portland, Maine -- Sweltering in full-length fur coats, four PETA members will endure the summer heat as they confine themselves to small cages on a street corner in Portland on Thursday under a banner that says, "Summer Is No Vacation for Animals on Fur Farms." Their point? Not only do fur-bearing animals suffer when they're skinned alive, they also suffer during the summer months when confined to cages in extremely hot temperatures.

Where: Northeast corner of Congress and High streets, Portland
Animals raised on fur farms are kept year-round in cramped, filthy cages and suffer from physical and psychological distress before they are killed by poisoning, gassing, anal electrocution, or neck-breaking. In the summer, countless animals (particularly young ones) also suffer from heat exhaustion and dehydration. PETA has obtained video footage of fur farms in China—which is now the world's leading fur exporter—showing animals, including cats and dogs, who were skinned alive.
"Animals on fur farms are literally dying to get out of their cages," says protester Ariela Ruben. "I can leave the cage any time I want. The only time animals on fur farms leave their cages is when they are killed or die from neglect."
