Pawtucket, R.I. -- Today's baseball stadiums offer an ever-increasing array of healthy and delicious vegetarian food choices. So, for the sixth straight year, PETA has ranked the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks in the minor leagues, and McCoy Stadium, home of the Pawtucket Red Sox, has made the list—coming in at ninth place.
"McCoy Stadium might host the minor leagues, but when it comes to the delicious health-, Earth-, and animal-friendly food offered at its concession stands, it's a major league player all the way," says PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein. "Even before the first pitch is thrown out, the Pawtucket Red Sox are a big winner in our book."
Leading off the lineup at McCoy Stadium are the veggie hot dogs and veggie burgers. Batting cleanup are the hummus and pita chips, garden salads, and fresh-cut veggie trays with carrots, broccoli, and celery.
Sliding into first place is Hammond Stadium, home of the Fort Myers Miracle, which serves vegetarian tacos, a vegan cheeseburger, and more. Coming in a close second is Frontier Field, home of New York's Rochester Red Wings, whose vegetarian specialties include vegan pizza, veggie dogs, and veggie burgers. Rounding out the top five minor league ballparks are the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the Wilmington Blue Rocks' Daniel S. Frawley Stadium, and the Tulsa Drillers' ONEOK Field. Finishing in first place in the major leagues is the Philadelphia Phillies' Citizens Bank Park, whose barbecued veggie Pit Beef, vegan chicken-steak, and faux-chicken patty sandwich put the park over the top for the fifth time in the past six years.
Each major and minor league park to make the list of Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks will receive a framed certificate from PETA. For more information and to see the complete major and minor league rankings, please click here and here.
