New York -- On Saturday, as Donna Karan prepares for her Fashion Week runway show, her midtown headquarters will receive a noisy wake-up call, courtesy of PETA. The group has secured a sound permit (available here) from the New York Police Department to blast Karan's offices with the sound of screaming rabbits. Protesters will also stand outside holding signs that read, "Donna Karan: New Age Hypocrite" and "Donna Karan: Bunny Butcher."
When: Saturday, February 12, 12 noon
Where: 550 Seventh Ave. (between 39th and 40th streets), New York
"There's nothing 'Zen' about skinning animals alive for their fur," says PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews. "If more consumers knew how rabbits suffer for Donna Karan's designs, they'd run screaming from her stores."
The recording was taken during an undercover investigation of a fur farm in China, a country from which Karan sources rabbit fur for her designs. Video footage shows workers pulling rabbits out of cages by their ears and stunning the screaming animals with electrical devices. Rabbits watch as other animals have their throats cut and their heads and paws cut off with knives before the skin is peeled off their bodies. PETA is calling on Karan to join the many top fashion designers—including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger—who are 100 percent fur-free.
