Hoboken, N.J. — With the demand for meat-, dairy-, and egg-free cuisine at an all-time high, a proliferation of vegan food trucks cruising city streets has made healthy and humane food choices more convenient than ever. With that in mind, PETA has just completed its first-ever ranking of the top five vegan-friendly food trucks in the U.S., and Hoboken's The Cinnamon Snail has finished in first place.
"We give The Cinnamon Snail—and all our winners—five big honks for helping to make delicious and animal-friendly vegan food more convenient than ever," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Every vegan-friendly food truck that hits the streets helps more and more people get on the road to a more humane, healthy life."
The menu at The Cinnamon Snail changes with the seasons, but the quality and selection of food are always top shelf. Popular entrées include the blue corn pancakes (with piñon butter and real maple syrup) and the Korean barbeque seitan (with chili butter, kimichi, and greens served open faced on a grilled tortilla). For dessert, the cupcakes and miniature cheesecakes can't be missed.
Taking second place is Chicago's Ste Martaen & Soul Vegetarian Vegan Food Truck. The menu changes daily, and favorites include the Chicago Cheesesteak (filled with seitan and grilled poblano peppers and topped with vegan cheese sauce), the Basil Focaccia Sandwich (marinated and baked tofu, sliced Ste Martaen cheese, and grilled red peppers and onions on fresh-baked basil focaccia bread), the carrot cake, and the chocolate mousse.
Rounding out the select mobile quintet are Sunny Vibrations in San Francisco, whose menu includes pizza burgers and shish kabobs; Seabirds in Orange County, Calif., which offers a beer-battered avocado taco and barbecue veggie burger; and Like No Udder in Warwick, R.I., which features vegan versions of old summer favorites, including a chocolate-peanut butter shake, a root beer float, and vanilla and chocolate soft-serve ice cream.
