Washington -- PETA members, dressed as a carrot, a stalk of celery, and the planet Earth; wearing patriotic red, white, and blue hats; and holding signs that read, "Turn the White House Green, Go Vegan," will be dancing through the Inauguration Day crowd in Washington on Monday. Their point? That the best way to reach that much-touted green goal is to go vegan.

When:   Monday, January 21, 12 noon–3 p.m.

Where:  In the vicinity of Capitol Hill, Washington

"Because red and white meats are responsible for environmental degradation on so many levels, you can't be 'green' if you have a chicken or steak on your plate," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "We're calling on President Obama to do his part to protect the planet in the name of his constituents, animal inhabitants, and human health by going vegan."

Raising animals for food is a leading cause of water pollution, land degradation, and the greenhouse-gas emissions responsible for climate change. Also, it takes about 16 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of meat. And raising animals for food consumes more than half of all water used in the U.S. Additionally, researchers at the University of Chicago concluded that switching from a standard American diet to a vegan diet is more effective at combating climate change than switching from a standard American car to a hybrid.
