Toronto — First came Major League Baseball in 2002, followed by the NFL in 2008. Now, for the first time, thanks to the explosion in vegetarian options at sports venues across the continent, PETA has ranked the top 10 most vegetarian-friendly NBA arenas, and the Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Raptors, is first runner-up.
"The NBA's only franchise outside the U.S. has an international vegetarian flair," says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "Fans flocking to see new arrival Rudy Gay won't be disappointed when they work up an appetite because getting healthy, humane, and delicious vegetarian fare at the Air Canada Centre's concession stands is a slam-dunk."
The Bollywood veggie dog with potato, tamarind ketchup, papadum, and mint chutney tops the offerings in the general seating areas. Other first-rate palate-pleasers include the grilled vegetable and arugula panini, vegetarian burrito, hummus-and-veggie wrap, and veggie dog topped with lettuce, tomato, and scallions. Fans in the premium areas have the added bonus of being able to chow down on the classy vegetable sushi and spicy vegan fajitas.
Taking first place was STAPLES Center, home to both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, thanks to the hearty vegetable burger, grilled vegetable sandwiches, savory edamame, and sloppy Joes made from soy-based tempeh with peppers, onions, and brown-sugar barbecue sauce. Third place went to the Philadelphia 76ers' Wells Fargo Center for its black-bean burgers, brown rice–based Malibu Burgers, and protein-packed veggie dogs. Rounding out the top 10 are theBMO Harris Bradley Center (Milwaukee Bucks), Oracle Arena (Golden State Warriors), the Rose Garden (Portland Trail Blazers), the United Center (Chicago Bulls), the AT&T Center (San Antonio Spurs), Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Indiana Pacers), and The Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit Pistons).
