Swain County, N.C. -- A dog believed to be 6 to 8 months old was found struggling to breathe after being tied up inside a plastic bag and thrown into a Dumpster off U.S. Route 19 just outside of Bryson City. The dog—since named Bryson by rescuers—was found on March 20 next to the discarded body of a dead dog. Bryson was apparently left to suffocate but managed to force his head and paws out of the trash bag in an effort to breathe. He sustained serious injuries, including a crushed muzzle, but is safely recovering at a local veterinary hospital.
Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with Bryson's apparent beating and abandonment. That's why PETA is offering up to $3,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this violent crime.
"Animal abusers are cowards," says PETA Director Martin Mersereau. "They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them. Swain County residents have good reason to be concerned. According to law-enforcement agencies and leading mental-health professionals, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to all animals—including humans."
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Swain County Sheriff's Office at 828-488-0159.
