Honolulu — With all the hubbub surrounding President Obama's release of his long-form birth certificate, PETA is reminding Americans that "papers" don't matter—when it comes to dogs and cats who long for a good home. That's why the group plans to run an ad campaign in Honolulu that features a photo of the president's eyes superimposed over the image of a mixed-breed dog and reads, "Papers, Schmapers—Who Needs 'Em? Adopt Any American Mix at an Animal Shelter Today." The group contends that dogs who are bred on purpose have nothing on those with unknown parentage.

"In the U.S., we have millions more dogs and cats without 'papers' than we have good homes for," says PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. "Whether you have a pedigree or mixed-breed cat or dog, the heart and loyalty of each companion animal is the same. Anyone who is considering welcoming a dog or a cat into his or her home should always adopt and never buy."

Buying a cat or a dog from a pet shop or a breeder kills a homeless animal's chance at finding a good home. Of the 6 to 8 million cats and dogs who end up in U.S. animal shelters each year, roughly half must be euthanized simply because there are not enough homes for them.
