Philadelphia - Holding signs that read, "Covance Poisons Animals" and "Don't Test on Me!" PETA members—several wearing monkey, dog, rabbit, and rat costumes—will confront shareholders arriving at the annual meeting of animal testing conglomerate Covance in Princeton on Thursday. PETA's point? That even though it's been six years since PETA's undercover investigation of Covance led to the company's being cited and fined for serious animal-welfare violations—including physically and psychologically tormenting animals—federal inspection reports show that dogs, primates, and other animals continue to suffer in Covance laboratories in violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Inside the meeting, a representative of PETA, which owns shares of Covance, will present a shareholder resolution demanding that company disclose what steps it has taken to correct its abysmal record of animal abuse.

Where:            Princeton Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at Forrestal, 100 College Rd. E., Princeton

When:             Thursday, May 12, 7 a.m.

Among Covance's myriad recent AWA violations are failure to provide adequate veterinary care to dogs who suffered from a painful dental disease that went untreated and failure to provide adequate veterinary care to a monkey who couldn't reach food or water for days because his leg became trapped in his cage.

"Covance's laboratories are a living hell for dogs, monkeys, rats, and all the tens of thousands of other animals who suffer and die in them," says PETA Vice President of Laboratory Investigations Kathy Guillermo. "We're demanding that the company come up with a serious plan to at least comply with the minimal requirements of the Animal Welfare Act."
