Augusta, Maine — In light of reports of the Maine legislature's food fight over whether the iconic whoopie pie is too unhealthy to be named the official state dessert, PETA has sent a letter to state Rep. Paul Davis with a suggestion for a compromise: Why not choose the vegan whoopie pie?

"As a Mainer myself, I recognize the place of the whoopie pie in the state's culture, but I also understand concerns over the unhealthy nature of it," writes PETA Marketing Director Joel Bartlett. "Promoting vegan whoopie pies as Maine's dessert of choice would also give animals cause for celebration."

As Bartlett explains in the letter—which includes his mother's recipe for vegan whoopie pies—the animal-derived products found in traditional pies are loaded with artery-clogging cholesterol. Vegan whoopie pies don't contain cholesterol or contribute to the animal suffering found on factory farms.

PETA's letter to Rep. Paul Davis is available upon request. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
