Fort Myers, Fla. — Hammond Stadium, home of the Fort Myers Miracle, has grabbed first place in PETA's annual ranking of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks in minor league baseball. This is the first time in the ranking's five-year history that Fort Myers has made the list, and the team didn't waste any time claiming the title. Topping the ballpark's impressive lineup of vegetarian options are the all-vegan cheeseburger, veggie chili-cheese dog, soft veggie tacos (with mango salsa and vegan cheese), and Tony LaRussa Dog (featuring a veggie burger wrapped around a veggie dog and topped with mushrooms, olives, and shredded vegan cheddar cheese on a sub roll).
"At Hammond Stadium, the delicious vegan and vegetarian food being served is proving to be a big hit with fans," says PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein. "With so many great animal- and health-friendly vegan and vegetarian options available, eating smart while cheering on the Miracle has never been easier."
Finishing in second place is the Rochester Red Wings' Frontier Field. The ballpark's menu winners include the veggie burger, veggie dog, pizza with vegan cheese, portobello mushroom burger, and mushroom kabob. Rounding out the top 10 are Municipal Stadium (Hagerstown Suns), Dutchess Stadium (Hudson Valley Renegades), Durham Bulls Athletic Park (Durham Bulls), AutoZone Park (Memphis Redbirds), Cheney Stadium (Tacoma Rainiers), ONEOK Field (Tulsa Drillers), Five County Stadium (Carolina Mudcats), and Cooley Law School Stadium (Lansing Lugnuts).
Top athletes, including slugger Prince Fielder, MMA fighter Jake Shields, NBA legend John Salley, NFL running back Ricky Williams, and Olympic great Carl Lewis, look to meatless meals to boost their health and help stop cruelty to animals. And a trip to ballpark concession stands confirms that many fans are getting the message too.
Each team on the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks list will receive a framed certificate from PETA. For more information and to see the complete list of winners from both the minor and major leagues, please click here.
