Durham, N.C. — Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home of the Durham Bulls, and Five County Stadium, home of the Carolina Mudcats, have grabbed two spots in PETA's annual ranking of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks in minor league baseball. Fifth-ranked Durham Bulls Athletic Park's veggie sausages, black-bean burgers, and tofu burritos gained this park a spot on the list last year, but this is the first time in the ranking's five-year history that Five County Stadium has made the top 10, coming in at ninth place for offering options such as veggie dogs, fresh fruit, and veggie wraps.
"At these two stadiums and around the league, the delicious vegetarian food being served is proving to be a big hit with fans," says PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein. "With so many great animal- and health-friendly vegetarian options available, eating smart while cheering on the Bulls and the Mudcats has never been easier."
Grabbing first-place honors is Hammond Stadium, home of the Fort Myers Miracle. The ballpark's menu winners include the all-vegan chili-cheese dog, the pepper-and-onion Philly sandwich, soft tacos, and the Tony LaRussa Dog (with olives, mushrooms, and vegan cheese). Rounding out the top 10 are Frontier Field (Rochester Red Wings), Municipal Stadium (Hagerstown Suns), Dutchess Stadium (Hudson Valley Renegades), AutoZone Park (Memphis Redbirds), Cheney Stadium (Tacoma Rainiers), ONEOK Field (Tulsa Drillers), and Cooley Law School Stadium (Lansing Lugnuts).
Top athletes, including slugger Prince Fielder, MMA fighter Jake Shields, NBA legend John Salley, NFL running back Ricky Williams, and Olympic great Carl Lewis, look to meatless meals to boost their health and help stop cruelty to animals. And a trip to ballpark concession stands confirms that many fans are getting the message too.
Each team on the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks list will receive a framed certificate from PETA. For more information and to see the complete list of winners from both the minor and major leagues, please click here.
