Memphis, Tenn. — AutoZone Park, home of the Memphis Redbirds, has grabbed sixth place in PETA's annual ranking of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks in minor league baseball. This is the fourth time in the ranking's five-year history that Memphis has made the list, and a visit to the park's concession stands reveals why this team made the cut. Topping the impressive lineup of vegetarian options are the grilled spicy black-bean burger, the baked potato bar, the veggie dog, the veggie sausage, and a delicious fruit medley.
"Delicious vegan and vegetarian options are fast becoming as American as baseball itself," says PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein. "With so many great animal- and health-friendly vegetarian dishes to choose from, eating smart while cheering on the Redbirds has never been easier."
Grabbing first-place honors is Hammond Stadium, home of the Fort Myers Miracle. The ballpark's menu winners include the all-vegan chili-cheese dog, pepper and onion Philly sandwich with vegan cheese, soft tacos, and Tony LaRussa Dog (with olives, mushrooms, and vegan cheese). Rounding out the top 10 are Frontier Field (Rochester Red Wings), Municipal Stadium (Hagerstown Suns), Dutchess Stadium (Hudson Valley Renegades), Durham Bulls Athletic Park (Durham Bulls), Cheney Stadium (Tacoma Rainiers), ONEOK Field (Tulsa Drillers), Five County Stadium (Carolina Mudcats), and Cooley Law School Stadium (Lansing Lugnuts).
Top athletes, including slugger Prince Fielder, MMA fighter Jake Shields, NBA legend John Salley, NFL running back Ricky Williams, and Olympic great Carl Lewis, look to meatless meals to boost their health and help stop cruelty to animals. And a trip to ballpark concession stands confirms that many fans are getting the message too.
Each team on the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks list will receive a framed certificate from PETA. For more information and to see the complete list of winners from both the minor and major leagues, please click here.
