Watsonville, Calif. — On May 25, a woman driving along White Road in Watsonville noticed a doghouse sitting on the side of the road. Inside was a shivering, frightened Chihuahua, whose paws were bleeding because her nails had curled around and penetrated her footpads. The dog was taken to the Santa Cruz County Animal Services' Live Oak location and treated for the infection in her paws as well as a skin infection. According to news reports, a witness reported seeing a man in his mid-40s driving a gray minivan in the vicinity with the partial license-plate number "3MKZ." PETA is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime

"It is imperative that, faced with a case of such horrific animal neglect and abuse, the community take measures to find the culprit or culprits and prevent such a thing from recurring," says PETA Director Martin Mersereau. "Animal neglect is a crime, and it cannot go unpunished."

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Santa Cruz County Animal Services at 831-454-7303, extension 1.
