Norfolk, Va. — Today, PETA's German affiliate launched its newest racy ad, which features none other than playboy Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The ad shows Berlusconi, who has recently come under criticism for his sexual exploits, alongside the words "Too Much Sex Can Be a Bad Thing … for dogs and cats too. There are so many homeless animals—Please spay or neuter your animal companion!" Other celebrities who have appeared in "Too Much Sex" ads for PETA and its affiliates include adult-film stars Sasha Grey, Jenna Jameson, and Ron Jeremy as well as golfer Tiger Woods, albeit involuntarily in his case, after publicly apologizing for multiple extramarital affairs.

"Prime Minister Berlusconi can do a great service by encouraging everyone to have their dogs and cats spayed or neutered," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "The hundreds of thousands of homeless strays in Italy don't make headlines as Berlusconi does, but they need people to pay attention to the crisis that their casual sex is causing."

Animal overpopulation isn't an issue only in Italy. Every year, 7 to 8 million cats and dogs enter U.S. animal shelters, and roughly half of them must be euthanized because there are not enough good homes—and part of the blame has to be borne by people who do not spay or neuter their animal companions.

Berlusconi has no formal affiliation with PETA or its affiliates and has not previewed or endorsed the ad, but PETA Germany says that the image and the idea were too good to pass up when it came to helping to fight the animal overpopulation crisis.
