Gay PETA Contingent Brings Veggie Pride to Capital Pride

Washington, D.C. -- PETA plans to make a big splash in this year's Capital Pride Parade with a phalanx of costumed "fruits" and "veggies" who will proudly wave "Eat Me" signs as they traverse the parade route. The colorful entourage—which will also include costumed "farmed animals" carrying "Don't Eat Me" posters—hopes to encourage passersby and parade participants alike to adopt a healthy and cruelty-free vegan diet.
When: Saturday, June 11, 5:30 p.m.
Where: Capital Pride Parade route (through Dupont Circle and northwest Washington, D.C.)
"The gay community has always embraced animal issues, especially veganism," says out PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews. PETA named Ellen DeGeneres "Person of the Year" for her tireless promotion of a vegan diet, both on and off her show. Among PETA's other notable gay supporters are Tim Gunn, who has helped PETA fight fur in the fashion world, blogger Perez Hilton, who routinely pushes PETA campaigns online, Lance Bass, who recently launched a spay-neuter campaign, and recently out vegan Sara Gilbert.
