Salt Lake City — Vegetarians love hot dogs! Veggie hot dogs, that is. So, for the first time ever, PETA has ranked the top five veggie dogs available from restaurants and food carts across the country for hot-dog lovers who respect animals, the environment, and their own health. Salt Lake City nabbed the number four spot in the nation with the "City Dog" veggie dog from City Dogs, a vegetarian food cart in downtown Salt Lake City.
Served across from the Tavernacle Social Club, City Dogs' "City Dog"—with freshly diced tomatoes, pickled asparagus, sport peppers, onions, and celery salt—is sure to get your taste buds dancing. Also try the veggie hot dog, with your choice of sauerkraut, onions, Vegenaise (a vegan mayonnaise), jalapeños, Tabasco, salt, pepper, ketchup, and yellow and spicy brown mustards.
First in the rankings is the "Fire on the Rhine" veggie dog from Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace in Columbus, Ohio. Grilled with sriracha, chili paste, garlic, and onions and topped with spicy sauerkraut, this bad boy will definitely get your juices flowing. Also available are the "Ohioana," with spicy corn relish and celery salt, and the "Hot Bollywood," with spicy mango chutney. Rounding out the top five are the "Chicago Impostor" from Franktuary in Pittsburgh; the flavor-of-the-islands "Veggie Puka Dog" from Puka Dog in Honolulu and Koloa, Hawaii; and the veggie dog from Lettuce Eat Healthy, also a food cart, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Honorable mentions go to the "Red Hot Bayou" from Cyber-Dogs in Seattle, the veggie dog from Soul Dog in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and the veggie dog from D's SixPax & Dogz in Pittsburgh.
"City Dogs and all our winners are top dogs in our book for meeting America's growing demand for delicious animal- and health-friendly faux meats," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Now anyone in the country can enjoy great hot dogs without costing a cow or a pig an arm and a leg."
City Dogs is located at 200 E. 300 S. The telephone number is 801-864-6753.
