Poughkeepsie — Vegetarians love hot dogs! Veggie hot dogs, that is. So—for the first time ever—PETA has ranked the top five veggie dogs available from restaurants and food carts across the country for hot-dog lovers who respect animals, the environment, and their own health. Poughkeepsie nabbed an honorable mention with the veggie dog from Soul Dog.
At Soul Dog, compassionate eaters are able to build their own perfect veggie dog with toppings such as vegetarian chili, fresh red onions, fresh jalapenos, and caramelized onions.
Top dog in the rankings is the "Fire on the Rhine" veggie dog from Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace in Columbus, Ohio. Grilled with sriracha, chili paste, garlic, and onions and topped with spicy sauerkraut, this bad boy will definitely get your juices flowing. Also available are the "Ohioana," with spicy corn relish and celery salt, and the "Hot Bollywood," with spicy mango chutney. Rounding out the top five are the "Chicago Impostor" from Franktuary in downtown Pittsburgh; the flavor-of-the-islands "Veggie Puka Dog" from Puka Dog in Honolulu and Koloa, Hawaii; the "City Dog" from City Dogs food cart in Salt Lake City (topped with pickled asparagus, diced tomatoes, and sport peppers); and the veggie dog from Lettuce Eat Healthy, also a food cart, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Other honorable mentions go to the "Red Hot Bayou" from Cyber-Dogs in Seattle and the veggie dog from D's Six Pax & Dogz in Pittsburgh.
"Soul Dog and all our winners are top dogs in our book for meeting America's growing demand for delicious animal- and health-friendly faux meats," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Now anyone in the country can enjoy great hot dogs without costing a cow or a pig an arm and a leg."
Soul Dog is located at 107 Main St. The telephone number is 845-454-3254.
