Fort Myers, Fla. — For coming to the rescue of a family of ducks who had become separated while crossing a busy intersection, Officer Glenn Eppler will receive a Compassionate Action Award from PETA.

According to news reports, last week, Eppler spotted 10 ducklings stranded in the middle of a busy street as their mother looked on in distress from the side of the road. He immediately pulled over, blocking traffic, and proceeded to shoo and gently carry the baby birds across the street to reunite them with their mother. "I saw the little baby ducks, and I thought of my daughter," Eppler later explained to news sources. "She's 10, and she loves ducks, and I could hear her in my ear saying, 'Get out there and save those ducks.'"

"Thanks to Glenn Eppler's fast actions, what could have been a tragedy for an entire family of ducks had a very happy ending," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Fort Myers is fortunate to have compassionate police officers who are ready to protect and serve all of their city's residents."

Eppler, who was assisted by an anonymous Good Samaritan, expressed regret that he didn't get a chance to find out his assistant's name. "I just want to tell him thank you very much for helping me out and for helping the ducks out," Eppler told news sources.

Eppler will receive a framed certificate, vegan chocolates, and a letter of appreciation.
