Cambridge, Mass. — On Monday, rescue crews from the Cambridge Fire Department were dispatched to the Charles River after a dog named Maggie, who had chased geese onto the frozen water, fell through thin ice. Firefighter Kevin Mercer swam to Maggie, and within minutes, he was able to pull her onto a surfboard. Fellow rescue workers Brian Peebles and Kyle Schweinshaut then pulled both Mercer and Maggie to shore. Maggie was wrapped in blankets and taken to the Animal Rescue League to be examined; she is reportedly in good health. Maggie's guardian, Susan Scott, told news sources, "I'm very grateful to municipal services being there when you need them." The Cambridge Fire Department will receive PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award.
"The compassion and heroism shown by the Cambridge Fire Department is an inspiration," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Cambridge is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect and serve both residents and their beloved animal companions."
The fire department will receive a framed certificate, vegan chocolates, and a letter of appreciation.
