Malibu, Calif. — On Wednesday, rescue crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were dispatched to the Malibu hills after two dogs who broke out of their fenced-in backyard became stranded on the cliffs. Fire Station #70 of Battalion 5 responded to the call and enlisted the help of Camp 8 of the Fire Suppression Camp Section, whose members are adept at scaling mountains. Four firefighters climbed up the steep hillside to the frightened dogs and then carried them down one at a time to the bottom of the hill, where the dogs greeted their grateful guardians—a little boy and his father—with kisses. For heroically and successfully reuniting the dogs with their family, the Los Angeles County Fire Department will receive PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award.

"The compassion and heroism shown by the Los Angeles County Fire Department is an inspiration," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Malibu is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect and serve both human residents and their beloved animal companions."

The fire department will receive a framed certificate and a letter of appreciation.
