Madison, N.J. — On July 8, the Madison Fire Department responded to a fire at a house on Wayne Boulevard where firefighters found an unconscious cat in the basement furnace room. They rushed the animal outside and gave her oxygen using an oxygen mask designed specifically for dogs, cats, and other animals. Within a few minutes, the cat began to respond, and firefighters whisked her away to the Madison Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

The cat, Corona, was released from the hospital three days later. She has slight lung damage but is on antibiotics and is expected to be just fine. For the firefighters' heroic actions, the Madison Fire Department will receive PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award.

"The compassion and heroism shown by members of the Madison Fire Department should serve as an inspiration to others always to help an animal in need," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Madison is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect both residents and their beloved animal companions."

The fire department will receive a letter of appreciation and a framed certificate.
