New York — Toronto-born rapper k-os' many fans might know that he was born Kevin Brereton—but do they know that he's been a vegetarian since 1993? It's true—and now he's letting the world know through a new print ad for peta2, the world's largest youth animal rights organization, just in time for the release of his new single, "Faith," featuring fellow Canadian Drake. In the ad, k-os appears in profile above the words "I am k-os, and I am a vegetarian. Live compassionately for your health, for animals, and for the planet. Go vegetarian."
k-os teamed up with peta2 for an interview in which he discussed how important it is for us to think about our diets. "You don't know what happens to the things that you eat," he explained. "You might go to the grocery store and you get a package [of meat], but how did that end up being at your house? These are questions you need to ask yourself because you're a part of that whole cycle."
Going vegetarian spares 100 animals a year from immense suffering on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and on the decks of fishing boats. And it's good for human health, too—according to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians are less prone to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters are. Meat production is also a leading cause of greenhouse-gas emissions, water pollution, and land degradation.
With a Grammy nomination and multiple Juno, Source, and MuchMusic Video awards to his name, k-os is a hip-hop force to be reckoned with. His fifth studio album, BLack on BLonde, is set for release this October.
k-os is part of a long list of musicians—including Pac Div, Masta Killa, Steve Aoki, Kid Sister, The Cool Kids, and more—who have teamed up with peta2 to fight animal abuse.
