Norfolk, Va. — As more and more Americans move away from foods that are loaded with unhealthy fat and cholesterol, many are discovering the benefits of fake steak, mock chicken, and other healthy and delicious meat-, egg-, and dairy-free options—especially as sandwich ingredients. August is National Sandwich Month and to mark the occasion, PETA scoured the country to find the top five vegan sandwiches in America. The results are in:
- The Revenge from Strange Matter, Richmond, Va.: Strange Matter scores with its faux -meat and -cheese sandwich. Bountiful to the point of being decadent, this winner features vegan ham, tempeh, and jackfruit between two dairy-free grilled cheese sandwiches.
- The Sweet Potato & Quinoa Burger from Marie Catrib's, Grand Rapids, Mich.: Souped up with protein-packed quinoa (KEEN-wah); piled high with onions, cilantro, and almonds; and topped with vegan mayo and ginger-tomato chutney, this meal on your choice of homemade bread is a true culinary experience.
- The Kindergarten, Vegan-Style from Melt Bar and Grilled, Lakewood and Cleveland Heights, Ohio: You only think that you know what a grilled cheese sandwich should taste like. Wait until you've had the vegan version of the Kindergarten, on fresh-baked bread with your choice of dairy-free American or mozzarella cheese.
- The Tempeh Tantrum from The Remedy Diner, Raleigh, N.C.: You'll go bonkers over this perfect blend of marinated tempeh (made from soybeans), faux bacon, homemade vegan pesto, avocado, and lettuce on sourdough.
- The Garnet Yam & Avocado Panini from Sugar Plum Vegan, Sacramento, Calif.: Topped with tomatoes, roasted onions, and poppy-seed aioli and served on ciabatta bread, this original defines gourmet sandwich.
"What you choose to eat between two slices of bread can make the difference between keeping yourself fit, trim, and vital or getting stuck eating hospital food after suffering a heart attack," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "We give all our winners five green stars for helping to feed America's growing demand for delicious health-, animal-, and eco-friendly food."
The Veggieball Torpasta from Devine Pastabilities in San Diego, the Midtown Melt from Blossom Du Jour in New York City, and the Sloppy Biscuit Sandwich from Vita Café in Portland earned honorable mentions.
