Sacramento, Calif. — As more and more Americans move away from foods that are loaded with unhealthy fat and cholesterol, many are discovering the benefits of fake steak, mock chicken, and other healthy and delicious meat-, egg-, and dairy-free options—especially as sandwich ingredients. August is National Sandwich Month, and to mark the occasion, PETA scoured the country to find the top five vegan sandwiches in America. The Garnet Yam & Avocado Panini from Sugar Plum Vegan in Sacramento made the cut.

Piled high with its namesake, garnet yam and avocado; stuffed with roasted onions, tomatoes, and poppy-seed aioli; and served on ciabatta bread, Sugar Plum Vegan's sandwich bursts with flavor.

Taking first place is The Revenge from Strange Matter in Richmond, Va. The Revenge—bountiful to the point of being decadent—features vegan ham, tempeh, and jackfruit between two dairy-free grilled cheese sandwiches.

Rounding out the top five are the Sweet Potato & Quinoa Burger Sandwich from Marie Catrib's in Grand Rapids, Mich. (protein-packed quinoa, onions, cilantro, almonds, vegan mayo, and ginger-tomato chutney); The Kindergarten, served vegan, from Melt Bar and Grilled in Lakewood and Cleveland Heights, Ohio (fresh-baked bread with a choice of dairy-free American or mozzarella cheese); and The Tempeh Tantrum from The Remedy Diner in Raleigh, N.C. (made with marinated tempeh, faux bacon, homemade vegan pesto, avocado, and lettuce on sourdough bread).

The Veggieball Torpasta from Devine Pastabilities in San Diego, the Midtown Melt from Blossom Du Jour in New York City, and the Sloppy Biscuit Sandwich from Vita Café in Portland earned honorable mentions.

"What you choose to eat between two slices of bread can make the difference between keeping yourself fit, trim, and vital or getting stuck eating hospital food after suffering a heart attack," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "We give Sugar Plum Vegan five green stars for helping to feed America's growing demand for delicious health-, animal-, and eco-friendly food."
